Vinyl is the material most people mean when they say they want a proper sticker. It is waterproof rather than water-resistant, it holds colour outdoors, it survives handling, and it comes off cleanly when the adhesive is specified correctly.
Paper stickers have their place — they are cheaper and they suit short-life indoor use. Vinyl is what you order when the sticker needs to last, get wet, or go outside. Choose your size, material and quantity below to see live pricing.

What vinyl actually gives you
Three things, and they are worth separating.
Waterproof, not water-resistant. A vinyl sticker can be submerged, run through a dishwasher on a bottle, or rained on for months without the face film breaking down. Paper stock absorbs water and delaminates.
UV stability. Vinyl films are made with inks and topcoats formulated to hold colour under sunlight. Paper and standard inks shift noticeably within months outdoors, usually reds and oranges first.
Physical durability. Vinyl flexes rather than tearing, survives being scuffed, and takes a laminate that adds further abrasion resistance. That is why it goes on laptops, water bottles, helmets, tool cases and anything that gets handled.
Finishes and grades
Gloss vinyl gives the highest colour saturation and the most familiar sticker look. It shows fingerprints and reflects light, which matters if the sticker will be photographed.
Matte vinyl is flat, non-reflective and increasingly the default for brand work. Colours sit slightly softer, and it photographs beautifully.
Clear vinyl leaves the surface visible around the printed areas, so a design appears to sit directly on the glass or bottle. Because there is no white base behind the ink, colours are less saturated — worth knowing if brand colours need to be accurate.
Holographic and metallic vinyls carry an effect in the film itself that printing cannot reproduce. They cost more per sticker and are worth it where the finish is the point.
Laminate is specified separately. On anything handled daily or exposed outdoors it adds years of appearance life for a small cost per sticker.
Where vinyl stickers are used
Product labelling on bottles, jars and packaging that will get wet or refrigerated. Outdoor equipment, toolboxes, machinery and safety marking. Laptops, drink bottles and personal items where the sticker gets touched constantly. Vehicle and window application. Event and promotional giveaways where the sticker needs to survive being carried around in a bag.
The common thread is that vinyl is chosen whenever the sticker has a job to do beyond looking right on the day it is applied.
Vinyl stickers are a versatile choice for both indoor and outdoor applications, offering durability and resistance to everyday wear. Popular uses include custom surfboard stickers, snowboard stickers, and guitar stickers, making them ideal for personalising sports equipment, musical instruments, and more.
Vinyl stickers and vinyl labels
These are different products and the distinction matters when ordering.
Stickers are individual, usually die-cut to shape, supplied as singles or on sheets, and applied by hand one at a time. They suit branding, giveaways, packaging seals and anything where each piece is placed deliberately.
Labels are supplied on rolls or sheets for repeated application, often to a product line, and are sized and shaped for consistency and speed rather than individuality.
If you are labelling a product run, you probably want labels. If you are producing something people will stick on things, you want stickers.
Frequently asked questions
Are vinyl stickers actually waterproof?
Yes, genuinely waterproof rather than water-resistant. The face film does not absorb water, so a vinyl sticker survives submersion, rain and refrigeration. The limiting factor is the adhesive bond to the surface rather than the sticker itself.
How long do vinyl stickers last outdoors?
Several years in Australian conditions on a properly prepared surface. UV exposure is the limiting factor rather than water. A laminate meaningfully extends outdoor life and is worth specifying for anything permanently outside.
Can vinyl stickers go in the dishwasher?
On a bottle or container, yes, provided the sticker is laminated and was applied to a clean, dry surface. Repeated high-temperature cycles will eventually work at the edges, but a laminated vinyl sticker handles normal dishwasher use.
Gloss, matte or clear — which should I choose?
Gloss for maximum colour and the classic sticker look. Matte for brand work, low glare and photographs. Clear where you want the surface visible around the design, accepting that colours sit less saturated without a white base behind them.
Do vinyl stickers come off cleanly?
With a removable adhesive on a sound surface, yes — gentle heat and a shallow pull. Permanent adhesives bond harder and are appropriate where the sticker is not intended to move. Tell us which you need when ordering.
Can I get any shape?
Yes. Die-cutting follows the outline of your artwork with no visible background. Common shapes such as circles, squares and rounded rectangles are straightforward, and custom outlines cost no more at most sizes.
What is the smallest size you can print?
Very small stickers are possible, but fine detail and small text become the limit rather than the size itself. If your design has thin lines or small type, we will tell you the size below which it stops reproducing cleanly.
Vinyl or paper — how do I decide?
Vinyl if the sticker will get wet, go outside, be handled repeatedly or needs to last. Paper if it is short-life indoor use and cost is the priority. For most branding and product applications, vinyl is the right answer.
Can I order a mix of designs?
Yes. Multiple designs can be printed in the same run, which is considerably cheaper than separate orders and keeps colour consistent across the set.
What artwork do you need?
Vector files are ideal — AI, EPS or PDF with fonts outlined. High-resolution raster files work well too. If you are unsure whether your file is suitable, send it and we will check before printing.
